City of Gastonia issued the following announcement on Nov. 1.

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United State and Canada presented a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the City of Gastonia’s Finance Department for its Annual Budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022. This is the 30th consecutive year that the City has received the award. The City also received “Special Long Range Financial Plans” Recognition with this award as well.

The City was also awarded the Certificate for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 2021. The report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

“We are very proud to receive this recognition from GFOA,” said Crystal Certain, the City’s Director of Financial Services. “It is important that our residents know that our budget and financial reports reveal sound fiscal stewardship.”

To receive the budget award an organization must satisfy nationally-recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. Those guidelines are designed to assess how well a budget report serves as a financial plan, a policy document, an operations guide, and a communications device.
