Community events planned across Gaston County for Thanksgiving week

The Gaston County Public Library will host a cross stitch bookmark crafting event on Wednesday, November 26. The session, called “Stitch-By-Stitch: Cross Stitch Bookmarks,” is open to all ages and will take place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room at 1555 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia. Materials are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Gaston County offices will be closed on Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28.

On Saturday, November 29, the Christmastown 5K Run will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at Community Center Plaza, located at 208 Main Street in McAdenville. Also on Saturday evening, Cherryville will hold its Christmas Tree Lighting event from 6 to 9 p.m. at Gazebo Mini-Park, featuring the lighting of the Who-Biliation Tree and downtown decorations.

Stanley’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting is scheduled for Sunday, November 30 at Main Street in Stanley starting at 5:30 p.m. National Recording Artist Bailey Marie will perform Christmas songs during the event.

Recent data show that college readiness among high school students in Gaston County varies by subject area. In the science portion of the ACT during the 2022-23 school year, about 17.6% of seniors and 20% of juniors were considered ready for college-level work. For reading, 26.5% of seniors and 27.1% of juniors met college readiness benchmarks. In math, 17.5% of seniors and 18.8% of juniors achieved scores indicating readiness for college courses.
