Gaston County recently issued the following announcement.
It’s that time again! Duke Energy will test its outdoor warning sirens around the Catawba Nuclear Station on Wednesday, July 8 at 11:50 a.m. The 89 sirens within 10 miles of the station will sound for three minutes. The public does not need to take any action.
This test is performed in cooperation with emergency officials in Gaston, Mecklenburg, and York counties, who are responsible for sounding the sirens. To ensure that they are working properly, some sirens may be tested more than once.
Because this is only a test, local broadcasting stations will not interrupt regular programming to broadcast the Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages. However, in the event of a real emergency at the plant, the sirens would be sounded, and local radio and television stations would broadcast information and instructions to the public.
These full-volume, three-minute siren tests are performed on the second Wednesday of each quarter between 10:00 a.m. and noon at the Catawba, McGuire, and Oconee nuclear plants in January, April, and July.
