Baseball will have a Black majority owner after Gastonia approved D.C.-area real estate developer Brandon Bellamy as the new majority owner of the city's unnamed Atlantic Baseball League team.
The new team will be the first professional ball team for Gastonia in 30 years, the Shelby Star reported on July 28.
Bellamy is the CEO of real estate and development firm Velocity Companies, the Shelby Star reported. His firm will also manage the city's new stadium being built in the FUSE District.
During a news conference at the Gastonia Conference Center, Bellamy, a North Carolina native, said he loves the "feeling of community" associated with professional baseball and committed to his desire to be a part of the community in Gastonia and a "good neighbor."
Bellamy also unveiled plans to seek assistance from the community in coming up for a name for the new team, the Shelby Star reported. “The name will be what the people of Gastonia want it to be."
