City of Gaston recently issued the following announcement.
If you’re looking for some family-friendly fun this fall, then you don’t have to go very far! The 6th Annual Somethin’ Pumpkin Cooking Contest and Festival is going virtual. This year’s event will be on Saturday, October 3 and includes the annual cooking contest and decorating contest. The awards program will be held online.
This free annual event, developed by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, encourages families to connect with local agriculture, as well as to one another. In previous years, the event has been held in conjunction with Cotton Ginning Days; however, after the 2019 Somethin’ Pumpkin festival, organizers decided to hold a separate event. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Somethin’ Pumpkin was moved to a virtual format.
There is no cost to enter the Somethin’ Pumpkin Cooking Contest, but anyone interested in participating must register by September 4. Registration forms and contest guidelines are available online at www.gaston.ces.ncsu.edu. Contestants will drop off entries on Saturday, October 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The winners will be announced online during the virtual awards program from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The Gaston County Cooperative Extension partnered with the Gaston County Public Library for the Somethin’ Pumpkin Decorating Contest. Families or youth interested in participating in the contest can pick up a pumpkin from the Main Library on Garrison Boulevard from September 21 through September 30. The decorating contest includes four categories: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Family, and Teen/Adult. Participants decorate a small pumpkin to portray a theme or character from their favorite book. All pumpkin entries must be submitted by October 1, 2020.
There were more than 50 participants in last year’s event, and the Somethin’ Pumpkin event continues to grow thanks to the support of local businesses and community organizations. This year’s event is sponsored by the City of Bessemer City, Town of Dallas, Farm Bureau of Gaston County, Ford’s Seed Store, Friends of the Gaston County Public Library, Gaston College Nutrition and Dietetics Program, Gaston County Public Library, Gaston County Sheriff’s Office, Gaston Travel and Tourism, Johnny’s Selected Seeds, KTC Broadcasting, Lineberger’s Farm, Minges Printing Company, NC Extension & Community Association (ECA), NC Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program, and What’s Up Shopper.
