Town of Gaston recently issued the following announcement.
Gaston County is asking residents to be weather aware as the Hurricane Sally continues to move inland and is tracked to head toward the Carolinas.
Though it is projected to be a depression or a low pressure system by the time it arrives, the National Weather Service is forecasting 4 to 6 inches of rainfall beginning late Wednesday and continuing for the next 24 hours.
The NWS is predicting the South Fork River will reach 12.4 feet by Thursday. This places the river in Minor Flood Stage. At 10 feet, flood waters begin to inundate Goat Island Park in Cramerton and are approaching Riverside Dr. and 5th and 6th Streets in Cramerton. At 11 feet flood waters begin flooding Riverside Drive between 5th and 6th Streets. Flood waters may also approach homes on Catawba Run Rd. in Lowell.
At this stage Hoyles Creek Rd. at Old Willis School Rd. north of Dallas, NC may also be impacted at the bridge near Sandcastle Road. At 11.5 feet flood waters are inundating Riverside Dr. between 5th and 6th Streets. The pumping station at Pharr Yarns in McAdenville may begin to flood and floodwaters may be approaching Lakeview Drive. At 12 feet floodwaters may approach the Cramerton Fire Department at the intersection of 8th Ave and 9th St and the parking lot adjacent to the Cramerton Drug Company may be flooded and may approach one home along Riverside Drive.
The Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services recommends the following for residents of Gaston County –
- For residents living along the South Fork River, the Catawba River, and along creeks and rivers pay attention to weather forecasts and to rising water levels. Residents with personal watercraft stored in boat houses and docks on those waters should consider bringing them ashore.
- Motorists should pay close attention when driving for flooding of roadways and over wash from creeks and streams. Never drive through water that is flooding roadways. Swift moving currents can quickly carry large vehicles downstream.
- Residents should check storm drains around their homes and make sure they are free of debris that can cause water to back up and flood and make sure sump pumps in basements are working properly.
- The Gaston County Office of Emergency Management recommends residents not take part in recreational water sports such as boating, swimming, and fishing in waterways during this weather event.
