Town of Gaston recently issued the following announcement.
On Tuesday, longtime Gaston County Attorney Charles ‘Chuck’ Moore was inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, a recognition for his nearly 40 years of government service.
Moore began as a part-time staff attorney for Gaston County in the summer of 1981. He was hired as the County’s full-time county attorney in December 1986 after the county had previous contracted the position out to a private-practice attorney.
On Tuesday night, Rep. John Torbett presented Moore with the induction into the order, which is reserved for government officials who have worked for more than 30 years in honorable government service in the state of North Carolina.
It is the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by North Carolina’s governor.
During his 39 years of service to Gaston County, Moore advised county managers and commissioners, shaped policy and protected the county’s interests along the way. His leadership and knowledge have resulted in incalculable benefits to Gaston County.
During the 1980s and 1990s as textile jobs were being outsourced overseas, Gaston County had one of the highest unemployment rates in North Carolina. Mr. Moore worked tirelessly to assist in recruiting more diverse industries and addressing the complex contractual negotiations that were needed. His diligence and expertise in economic development helped the County to transform from a textile-centric economy to one comprised of hundreds of quality, high paying jobs in advanced manufacturing, ensuring a strong economic base for the future.
Moore was also instrumental in assisting the Gaston County Police Department’s efforts in the 1980s and 1990s to establish police standards and procedures which laid the foundation for the department to become the first in North Carolina to receive national accreditation. This accreditation resulted in substantial savings to the County with a huge decrease in the County’s liability insurance premium.
Born in Virginia, and a varsity baseball player at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Moore started his legal career in the small town of Wallace in eastern North Carolina. He moved to Gaston County shortly before taking the job with the county and has been a longtime resident of Belmont. He and his wife, Lisa, have been married for 45 years, and have two children and five grandchildren.
Moore retired on Aug. 1, capping a career of public service and dedication that has spanned almost four decades. Mr. Moore made a commitment long ago to public service, and that commitment has carried him through a professional career of unequaled integrity, honor and perseverance in serving the citizens of Gaston County.
