City of Cherryville issued the following announcement on Jul. 15.
Vickie Hoyle Spurling and Chris Spurling and I agreed last year that we would only do one Main Street project at a time. We are rationalizing doing this one at the same time as Belk's because it is on Mountain Street!
Introducing Donald Alexander (A&A Painting). He gets up early and we like that about him! And yes, he is hand re-painting the original orange colored steel. Who knew Orange is on the official YMCA color palette?! This building at 215 N Mountain St. was built in 1950 as Cherry Motors, Inc. - the only Chrysler-Plymouth Dealer in Gaston County for decades.
The building has a barrel roof (just like the Pink Building). Currently being replaced by GSM Services of Gastonia. It had 2 ceilings - they are both now gone - and the building is opened up to the wonderful wooden cathedral you can see here. There is a lot of work to do for us to be ready for our August 1st target completion.. As usual Chris Spurling is coming up with solutions to our construction challenges. All of the side windows were bricked up or covered in tin. The new windows are being custom made locally. Factory ordered windows are back ordered about four months right now. This is Phase 1 - there is actually over 13,000 square feet under roof at this location and we are working on less than half of it. Vic Hoyle and his team did the demo in between framing the upstairs and first floors of the Belk Building. It was a real challenge - especially in the heat and humidity of June.
Karen Yamasaki learned to swim at the Y in her hometown. She went on to become a life guard. We are all hopeful that this new beginning will be the platform for a membership drive and growth for the Cherryville YMCA. It is such an important part of our Community.
The before and after is going to be something else on this building!
