Smoketestngsewer

City of Lowell issued the following announcement on Sep 24.

City crews will be conducting smoke testing on the City's sanitary sewer system on September 23rd & 24th to detect breaks and defects within the sewer system. A non-toxic smoke manufactured for this purpose will be used. This smoke leaves no residuals or stains and has no effect on plant or animal life. The smoke poses absolutely no fire hazards and is used only for visual effects. Visibility and odor last only a few minutes, where there is proper ventilation.

Please pour water into unused floor drains, sinks and tubs to fill traps and prevent any smoke from entering your home. If smoke enters your home or business, it could be due to:

- Vents connected to your buildings plumbing could be inadequate, defective, or improperly installed.

- Traps under sinks, tubs, basins, showers are dry, defective, missing or improperly installed.

- Pipes, connections, and seals under your building may be damaged, defective, have plugs missing of are improperly installed.

Please be advised that if traces of smoke or odor enter your home or business, it is a good indication that odors and gasses from the sewer system may also enter. Should smoke enter your home or business, open doors or windows to ventilate the space and contact a plumber to locate and repair the deficiency.

Please contact City Hall with any questions or concerns at 704-824-3518, option 1.
