City of Cherryville Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on June 30.
We didn’t choose Gaston County on a whim. Gaston is home to a world-class – and one of the world’s best – lithium ore mineral resource: the Carolina Tin Spodumene Belt. Gaston County is the perfect location to bring manufacturing of lithium hydroxide back to the United States and lead the electrification revolution.
Historically, Gaston County produced lithium for a multitude of key uses, such as medicine, greases for WWII aircraft engines, and nuclear fusion weapons during the Cold War. Lithium is once again in high demand, especially for use in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
The Carolina Lithium Project will build upon Gaston County’s legacy and position in the region as the largest supplier of lithium “made in the USA.”
