COUNTY OF GASTON: to Operate Building Inspections for Entire County

City of Gastonia issued the following announcement on Aug. 11.

This month, the City of Gastonia and Gaston County Government will complete the process of blending the City’s Building Inspections Department into Gaston County Government’s Department of Building and Development Services.

This move will make it easier for customers, with all building inspections and permits flowing through one centralized location, to use a simple online application process.

“This initiative is intended to provide all of Gaston County with consistency during the building and development process, which should save both time and money,” Gaston County Director of Building Services Brian Sciba said. “We also see this agreement as a sign that Gaston County and the City of Gastonia are prioritizing planned growth and development and are finding ways to support this growth to ensure its success.”

Already underway is the data conversion process, moving the permits in the City’s system to Gaston County’s permitting system. The City and County are working to have that process completed by the end of the day on Sunday, August 28, as the changeover is set to be completed on Monday, August 29.

Employees who worked in the City of Gastonia’s Building Inspections Department will be shifted over to the County, making a seamless transition for customers and ensuring institutional knowledge remains intact.

There are several key dates for the transition this month listed below:

Saturday, August 6: City of Gastonia will stop accepting permits that require plan review or resubmittals for projects

Monday, August 8: Gaston County will begin receiving permit requests for projects that require plan review, such as new homes, additions and almost all commercial projects

Friday, August 19: The last day that the City of Gastonia will issue permits and perform inspections

Saturday, August 20:  Sunday, August 28: No permits will be issued or inspections performed for projects within Gastonia city limits

Monday, August 29: Merger finalized, and Gaston County will begin permitting and inspection of all projects within the City limits of Gastonia

Any contractor working on City of Gastonia projects that does not have an account with Gaston County’s Department of Building and Development Services will need to create one to access permits and schedule inspections. The account registration can be completed online. Anyone needing help with the transition is encouraged to connect with County Permitting Manager Emily King (Email Emily King).

“Emily and her staff will gladly guide anyone through the system,” Sciba said. “If needed, County permitting staff can schedule in-person training to ensure this transition goes smoothly for everyone that uses our services.”

As is already the process for other Gaston County municipalities, for any project that needs a zoning permit prior to obtaining a building construction permit, that process should be completed first.
