CITY OF MOUNT HOLLY: Water Meter Replacement Project

City of Mount Holly issued the following announcement on Oct. 24.

Over the past year, the City of Mount Holly has been working on a water meter replacement project incorporating a new AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) meter. This integrated system of water meters enables two-way communication between customers and Utilities, allows citizens to view their water usage in real-time, and is more efficient by allowing meters to be read electronically.

By July 2022, the City and its contracted installers have replaced all of the residential and small (under 2”) water meters with this new AMI meter.

During system activation, staff realized that there was a programming issue which has resulted in some inaccurate water usage readings for approximately 575 customers out of 7,344 total customers. Additionally, during installation wrong dials were installed by the manufacturer at a few locations thus resulting in overcharges for certain customers. Staff and the contractors have been working diligently to diagnose each issue, checking the programming of each meter, and issuing credits to customers when needed.

So far this month that the majority of high usage bills are the result of leaks at the customer’s locations. These leaks are being repaired and leak adjustments are being provided for those customers. The Utilities Department is running leak reports from the online portal and leaving door knockers at these locations.

Due to the issues, the September late fees were waived for all customers.

The City apologizes for these inconveniences and stresses patience as we implement this new system. However, if customers are continuing to experience issues, please contact Customer Service at (704) 827-3931.
