City of Gastonia Police Department issued the following announcement on Nov. 7.
We recently had a resident scammed out of a few thousand dollars by a person claiming to be a Lt. Carter with the Gaston County Sheriff's Office.
This fake Lt. Carter called the victim saying the victim missed a court date. Fake L.t Carter then told the victim that they could pay the “fine” by obtaining gift cards from local stores and providing the card numbers to him.
We verified with the Gaston County Sheriff's Office that they do not have Lt. Carter working for them.
GPD reminds residents that legitimate law enforcement agencies will not call individuals and demand or request money from community members for unpaid traffic citations, outstanding warrants, or, in this case, missed court dates.
