Notice of Discharge of Untreated Sewage | CITY OF MOUNT HOLLY: (https://www.mtholly).us/)
City of Mount Holly issued the following announcement on Jan. 6.
The City of Mount Holly had a discharge of approximately 40,400 gallons of untreated wastewater from our Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 201 Broome Street.
The heavy rains that occurred on January 3rd and 4th, 2023, led to an overflow at one of the incoming points for flow called a “city ditch”.
This caused water to flow through two gravel filters and entered the storm drain that flowed towards the Catawba River.
The spill was contained after two hours and thirty minutes of the initial start of the spill.
Staff made every effort to mitigate the amount of overflow water.
There has been no environmental impact due to this incident.
A representative from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality was contacted during the incident.
This notice was required by North Carolina General Statutes Article 21, Chapter 143.215C.
The Plant was running two pumps to keep up with incoming flow and once the rain subsided, the pumps started pumping down the basin and city ditch area which stopped the spill event.
Staff cleaned the water of minimal floating debris and applied lime to clean the affected area of the spill.
Staff has started tracking the collections system to find the source of where the excess stormwater is coming in from to help prevent future incidents.
The spill event ended at 2:00 PM on January 4, 2023.
