Catherine Rivera Barber's journey to Belmont Abbey College was shaped by early experiences in leadership and faith. Born in New York and raised in North Carolina, her upbringing was marked by her parents' dedication despite economic challenges. This environment laid the groundwork for her eventual pursuit of an MBA at Belmont Abbey College.
Barber's path to higher education began after she graduated high school, earned two associate degrees, married, and had her first child. She joined Belmont Abbey College as a Business Management student, balancing academic pursuits with family responsibilities. Her time there proved transformative, thanks to the support from professors. "The adult degree program helped me and my husband balance the needs of work, school, and life," she recalled.
Her aspirations led her back to Belmont Abbey for an MBA program that she completed in 2024. Reflecting on this experience, Barber noted how it cultivated “a holistic approach toward corporate leadership.” The program emphasized servant leadership infused with Benedictine values. Barber appreciated the flexibility of online classes and faculty support while managing work and family life.
“I had a fantastic experience with the faculty of Belmont Abbey College,” she stated. The courses challenged her understanding but also provided moments of reflection that deepened her skills as an ethical leader.
During challenging times in the program, such as falling behind due to illness, Barber drew strength from faith inspired by her parents. Dr. Ann Marie Hayes played a role in this through supportive gestures like sending Bible verses to students.
Barber completed the MBA with confidence in both professional skills and community impact potential. Her story illustrates how faith and education combined can foster meaningful leadership development.
