After over two decades of leadership, Dr. William (Bill) Thierfelder has announced his retirement as president of Belmont Abbey College, effective August 2, 2025. This date marks the 21st anniversary of his tenure at the college.

Dr. Thierfelder took on the role in 2004 and has since overseen significant growth and development at Belmont Abbey College. His achievements include expanding academic programs, enhancing campus facilities with five new residence halls, and launching a $150 million capital campaign. He also strengthened the college's Catholic identity and fostered community partnerships.

Reflecting on his time as president, Dr. Thierfelder stated, "Serving as president of Belmont Abbey College has been the joy of a lifetime." He expressed gratitude to administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters for their shared commitment to the college's mission.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Chuck Cornelio praised Dr. Thierfelder’s impact: "Belmont Abbey College would not be the wonderful place it is if not for Bill Thierfelder." Cornelio highlighted Dr. Thierfelder's instrumental leadership over two decades and confirmed that he will continue to be involved with the college in various ways after retirement.

Abbot Placid Solari from Belmont Abbey Monastery also expressed gratitude: “On behalf of all the monks of Belmont Abbey, I wish to express our profound gratitude to Dr. and Mrs. Thierfelder for their twenty-one years of generous and dedicated service.”

During his presidency, Dr. Thierfelder achieved several key milestones:

- Academics: Launched eight new master's degree programs and established nationally recognized initiatives such as the Honors Institute.

- Enrollment: Increased undergraduate enrollment from under 500 to over 1,600 students.

- Facilities: Completed 40 new or refurbished facilities including new residence halls.

- Philanthropy: Raised over $185 million since 2004.

- Athletics: Grew athletics programs significantly; instituted Sport & Virtue approach across athletic departments.
