Belmont Abbey College has chosen Little Diversified Architectural Consulting to design its new Visual and Performing Arts Center. This decision follows a comprehensive research process and significant community input. The North Carolina General Assembly allocated $9 million for the project in October 2023 as part of its biennial budget.
The college formed a Community Leaders’ Advisory Committee, comprising over 40 leaders from the college and the community, to plan the center's construction. Little was selected due to their expertise in designing performing arts spaces and commitment to creating a cultural hub.
Tom Balke, AIA, Community Studio Principal at Little, stated, “We look forward to partnering with Belmont Abbey College and the surrounding region to bring their vision to reality.” The firm aims to honor the Abbey’s Catholic heritage and Benedictine values through thoughtful architectural design.
The new center will feature a 1,000-seat theater along with versatile performance spaces, workshops, wardrobe areas, event spaces, and exhibition areas. Phil Brach, Vice President of College Relations at Belmont Abbey, expressed confidence in Little's ability to create a space that aligns with their vision for artistic excellence.
Reeves McGlohon praised Belmont Abbey for forming an advisory group that provided valuable input into planning the project. As part of this initiative, the Haid Theatre at Belmont Abbey College will also be renovated.
Debbie Windley highlighted strong community support for the project as it complements Gaston County's One Gaston 2040 plan focused on cultural growth. Donny Hicks emphasized the center's potential impact on attracting people and companies to Gaston County.
Next steps include selecting a general contractor and site location. The project team will work collaboratively on scheduling to ensure seamless construction.
